Q: What are the core requirements of the R2 Standard?
A: The R2 Standard includes 10 core requirements that all certified facilities must adhere to:
- Scope: Identify and certify all processes, equipment, and materials related to electronics recycling.
- Hierarchy of Responsible Management Strategies: Prioritize reuse, followed by materials recovery for recycling.
- EH&S Management System: Maintain a certified Environmental, Health, and Safety Management System (EHSMS).
- Legal and Other Requirements: Comply with all applicable environmental, health, safety, and data security legal requirements.
- Tracking Throughput: Track and manage the throughput of all electronic equipment, components, and materials.
- Sorting, Categorization, and Processing: Evaluate, sort, and categorize equipment in accordance with the R2 Equipment Categorization (REC) reference document.
- Data Security: Provide secure and effective data sanitization for all data storage devices.
- Focus Materials: Manage Focus Materials (FMs) in a manner protective of worker health and safety, public health, and the environment.
- Facility Requirements: Meet specific facility requirements for processing and storage of electronic equipment.
- Transport: Ensure secure and responsible transport of electronic equipment, components, and materials.
