Data Center Decommissioning Services
From ITAMG
Data center decommissioning services from ITAMG serve enterprises, colocation providers, and hyperscale operators across all 50 states, from a single rack to multi-site projects. ITAMG crews do the physical work on site: de-racking servers, storage arrays, network gear, racks and power infrastructure, then packing and moving your equipment under documented chain of custody. The agreed scope covers NAID AAA certified data destruction, eligible asset recovery and serialized project reporting. ITAMG processes hardware from 150+ manufacturers, including Dell, HPE, Cisco and Nvidia.

Serialized audit and compliance report on every device.
ITAMG decommissions single racks to entire facilities nationwide. Free, no-obligation quotes typically within 2 business days after inventory and scope are confirmed.
ITAMG successfully managed the decommissioning of Wish's infrastructure across our Equinix and CoreSite data centers, completing the entire project in just 10 days, well ahead of schedule. After evaluating more than 40 companies, I can confidently say they offered the best market value. Their integrity also stood out by identifying additional inventory that was not part of our original scope and compensating us an additional $250,000 for it. I highly recommend ITAMG for their speed, execution, transparency, and professionalism.
Data Center Decommissioning, Covered End to End
ITAMG manages the entire decommissioning project, end to end, in all 50 states, from de-racking a single server room to clearing hyperscale facilities. Data center decommissioning is the managed retirement of a facility's IT infrastructure, and the work runs four streams at once: data destruction, logistics, value recovery, and compliance. With ITAMG, one project manager owns it from first contact through final documentation, and the same person answers for the schedule, the custody records, the recovered value, and the reporting. Your team gets one point of contact, one chain of custody, and one company accountable for the entire project.
Your team retains workload, retention and release approvals. Specialist facility work and the required handback condition are agreed in the statement of work. For scope, costs and provider evaluation, use the data center decommissioning guide.
Wiped or shredded under NAID AAA
Retired servers, storage arrays, and loose media are sanitized on site or at ITAMG's facility, each drive following NIST 800-88 Rev. 2 and certified by serial number.
Own crews de-install and crate
Background-checked ITAMG technicians handle the de-racking and equipment removal. Secure, insured transport then carries every load under documented chain of custody.
Tested, graded, remarketed
Every data center asset is priced against secondary-market data and quoted line by line, so the recovery number is auditable instead of a lump sum.
R2v3 downstream, tracked to final disposition
Certificates, manifests, and disposition records land in one portal, mapped serial by serial so an auditor can trace any device or drive.
ITAMG's Data Center Decommissioning Process
The data center decommissioning process at ITAMG runs seven documented steps from scoping to certified closeout under documented chain of custody. Your team approves the inventory, workload release, data requirements and project plan. Use the data center decommissioning plan and checklist to prepare those approvals and records. On-site data treatment precedes shipment; off-site treatment follows secure transport and receiving.
Scope and quote
Scoping starts with a rack count or asset export, though a site walkthrough works just as well. Your team identifies the applicable requirements, including HIPAA, GLBA, SOX or state privacy law where relevant. ITAMG confirms the contracted controls and assigns one project manager for the engagement.
Lock the plan
You approve the schedule, the access and escort windows, and the phasing before any crew arrives. ITAMG sequences work around production floors that stay live, and holds one timeline across every location on multi-site programs.
Destroy the data
Every data-bearing drive is wiped or shredded under NAID AAA, with the method matched to the NIST 800-88 Rev. 2 level the data calls for. The work runs at your facility or at ITAMG's, and the quote prices both so the choice stays yours.
Remove and ship
Once your shutdown sequence completes, crews de-install the floor: racks emptied, cabling mined, equipment packed and crated. Loaded gear then moves to the ITAMG processing facility on GPS-tracked, insured vehicles.
Recover value
Resale-eligible hardware is tested, graded and remarketed through established channels, and whatever it earns is credited against the cost of your project. Recovery may offset part or all of the agreed project cost.
Recycle the remainder
Hardware with no market value goes to R2v3 certified downstream partners and is tracked to final disposition. ITAMG's documented zero-landfill policy covers the diversion, backed by 3M+ lbs of e-waste processed a year.
ITAMG’s annual recycling figure covers its companywide operations. See data center recycling services for the processing and reporting scope.
Certify and close
Closeout arrives as a document package, not a phone call. The project closes against the site condition and documentation agreed in the statement of work. Any restoration work and its responsible contractor must be specified.
Data Center Equipment We Decommission and Buy Back
ITAMG decommissions data center IT equipment and buys back hardware that still holds market value. ITAMG processes 150+ hardware brands across its operations. Include power and cooling equipment in the inventory so acceptance, specialist work and the removal scope can be confirmed.
Servers and Mainframes
Dell PowerEdge, HPE ProLiant, Cisco UCS, Supermicro, plus IBM and Oracle mainframes. Legacy platforms decommission alongside current fleets.
GPU and AI Systems
Nvidia DGX, HGX, A100, H100, and L40 platforms. GPU systems retain resale value that buyback returns to the project budget.
Storage Arrays
NetApp, Dell EMC, Pure Storage, and HPE arrays. Every data-bearing device is sanitized or destroyed with per-serial verification.
Network Equipment
Cisco Catalyst and Nexus, Juniper, Arista, and Palo Alto. Configurations, stored credentials and embedded media follow the approved treatment method and location.
Components
Intel Xeon and AMD EPYC processors, ECC memory, NVMe and SAS drives, RAID controllers, and power supplies recovered at line level.
Media and Tape
Backup tapes, DLT, and loose drives. Shredding, degaussing, and certificates close out the media archive with the facility.
Power and Cooling Infrastructure
List UPS units, PDUs, CRAC units, rack enclosures and liquid cooling systems separately. Confirm ownership, acceptance and qualified disconnection or recovery contractors in the scope.
End-User and Peripheral Devices
Laptops, desktops, and monitors swept in facility clear-outs, processed under the same certificates as the racks.
ITAMG Data Center Decommissioning by the Numbers
ITAMG’s companywide operating record supports its data center decommissioning services. Since 1999, ITAMG has completed 25,000+ projects, with zero reported data breaches. Service coverage spans all 50 states.
Data Center Decommissioning Case Studies
ITAMG completed the three data center decommissioning projects below. The clients are not named. Each study shows what was on site, how the work was scheduled, how every drive was handled, what the project cost, and what the client was paid back. All three finished on schedule. In all three, what ITAMG paid the client was more than the project cost.
How a regional bank cleared four sites and reconciled 2,341 assets
Across two owned data centers and two rented colocation cages, ITAMG reconciled asset-tag and serial-number records that did not share a common key.
How a health system cleared 52 racks and cabinets without moving readable media off-site
ITAMG planned night work around clinical access, destroyed media at each originating site and handed 1,900 square feet back on schedule.
How a software company exited two colocation sites four days early
ITAMG ran both exits in parallel, separated 88 lease returns and moved 24 complete GPU nodes directly into recovery before handback.
