decommissioning toolkit

Data center decommissioning toolkit resources from ITAMG give your team a working project file for retiring servers, storage and network equipment. ITAMG provides a blank 39-worksheet Excel planner, a 36-page PDF planning guide and a separate completed example, available together through the form below.

The Excel workbook includes 33 working registers for project scope, sites, equipment and media inventories, dependencies, vendors, removal waves, tasks, costs and evidence. Linked record IDs connect the work: which site an asset belongs to, who owns the next action, where a drive moved and which treatment or closeout records remain outstanding.

Instructions, legends and dropdown choices explain how to complete the planner. Use the PDF to work through the decommissioning decisions, then consult the fictional example for completed records across multiple sites. Save your project in the blank workbook and keep the example alongside it as a reference.

Workbook questions

Decommissioning template and download questions

Are all workbook entries dropdowns?

Controlled categories and statuses use dropdown choices. Project-specific information such as IDs, names, dates, quantities and notes needs the appropriate typed value. The workbook includes instructions and legends to explain what each input requires.

How do I add equipment to the decommissioning inventory?

Enter equipment in the asset register and link each record to its site. Add the associated drives and other data-bearing media in the media register, using the workbook’s ID instructions. Follow the table-expansion guidance when adding rows so the dropdown choices and calculations carry into the new records.

Does submitting the form start a project?

The form provides access to planning resources. Execution scope, site requirements and service arrangements are discussed separately. Use the planning page to review the checklist, or contact ITAMG about decommissioning services.
