About the data
and methodology

Understand what the directory counts, how records are brought together, and where the data has limits.

What the index counts

This directory includes 3,588 Data Center facilities across the United States and the District of Columbia.

The total describes records included in the ITAMG directory. It is not an estimate of every data center in the country or a measure of national computing capacity. Geographic coverage varies, so a place with fewer listings may have facilities that are not represented here.

Records pass location and data center inclusion checks before entering the directory. Location information may be a street address or coordinates. The map displays records with coordinates; records without coordinates remain in the table.

Facilities and operators

A facility entry describes a recorded location. “Operator” follows attribution in the source records and does not establish ownership of the land, building or all capacity at that site.

Shared sites and campuses

A shared address can involve several buildings or organizations. Confirm building identity and campus boundaries directly when you need precision about a property.

How records are brought together

The directory combines records from industry directories, infrastructure and interconnection datasets, and public filings. Its matching process uses names, operators, addresses and geographic coordinates to identify overlapping records.

  1. Collect and normalize

Bring source records into a common set of fields and formats.

  2. Match and combine

Use identity and location information to identify overlapping entries.

  3. Apply inclusion checks

Evaluate the record’s location and data center classification.

A repeatable matching process helps keep the directory consistent. It does not establish that every source claim is correct or that every US facility has been captured.

Confidence, grades and source counts

The confidence score considers dataset count, address information, operator attribution across datasets, field completeness and source authority. Address information is assessed from available identifiers and address structure. Operator attribution is compared between datasets; it does not mean the operator was contacted to confirm a record.

GoldSilverBronze
Gold
Confidence score of 70 or above.
Silver
Confidence score of 45 to 69.
Bronze
Confidence score of 20 to 44.

These are categories within the record scoring system. They do not rate service quality, capacity, reliability or Uptime Institute Tier. A numerical score is not a measured percentage probability that every field is correct.

How many datasets report each facility?

One dataset
1,575 (43.9%)
Two or more datasets
2,013 (56.1%)

A source count tells you how many recorded datasets report a facility. Multiple datasets can share an upstream origin, so their count is not necessarily a count of independent confirmations. A record reported by one dataset is not automatically incorrect.

The public record panels show dataset counts. They do not provide a complete list of underlying documents, observations or field-level provenance. The confidence label and count alone cannot establish the accuracy of a particular field.

Coverage and missing information

Some records contain more details than others. Location fields are widely available; size, power and connectivity information is less complete. Every percentage below uses all 3,588 records as its denominator.

Field presence across included facilities
Field availableRecordsCoverage
Coordinates3,58599.9%
Reported floor area1,12131.2%
Network count85823.9%
Reported power2597.2%

Field presence measures completeness. It does not independently verify the accuracy of those values.

Does “Not reported” mean zero or none?

No. It means the directory has no value to display for that field. Missing floor area does not mean a building has no floor space. Missing certification information does not establish that the facility lacks a certification.

Why can the table contain more records than the map?

The map needs coordinates to place a marker. The directory has coordinates for 3,585 of its 3,588 records. Records without coordinates remain available in the directory table.

Can I add up reported floor area to estimate national capacity?

The sum describes reported floor area in the tracked records. Coverage is incomplete, definitions can vary, and floor area alone does not measure computing capacity or electricity demand.

Use the data with its scope in mind

Useful starting points

  • Find tracked facilities in a place.
  • Explore recorded operator presence.
  • Compare counts within this directory.
  • Identify locations for further research.

Needs additional evidence

  • Total US computing or power capacity.
  • Availability, pricing or ownership.
  • A facility’s quality or compliance status.
  • Market growth inferred from directory counts.

A larger directory count can reflect differences in discovery, inclusion or coverage. It does not, by itself, establish that more facilities were built. Confirm relevant details with the operator or an official source before relying on a record for a decision.
