In IT procurement, the RFP process that we see tends to be largely broken. Over the last 25 years, we’ve had the experience of receiving multiple RFPs from the same organization. Spanning over multiple decades, we’ll see that they haven’t changed or improved their requirements in their RFP at all. Meanwhile, during that time, the landscape and opportunities in the space have changed dramatically and improved over time. What we often see is outdated data destruction standards, misunderstandings of third-party certifications, and ignorance of how the ITAS ad and e-waste space operates. Procurement teams are at a disadvantage when they treat specialized services like ITAD as a commodity, trying to get the lowest price point possible. What many don’t realize is that going cheap doesn’t even result in getting the best financial results for your company. The most sophisticated ITAD providers recover high value from surplus IT equipment through resale and repurposing, but they are rarely the cheapest price on service and logistics. Without good past performance data and disposal records from a reputable provider, procurement teams struggle to grasp the true competitive landscape of ITAD vendors. Many organizations fall into a trap, choosing the cheapest provider, which often results in sacrificing service levels and missing out on an asset recovery opportunity that could have returned more value than just a discounted recycling rate.
