Data Center Decommissioning for Expedient Customers
Data center decommissioning for Expedient customers from ITAMG covers the retirement of customer-owned servers, storage and network equipment. ITAMG provides removal, data destruction, transport and disposition reporting for enterprise colocation deployments in the United States.
A hardware retirement can coexist with retained cloud, network or facility services. Identify what leaves, what stays and which operator approvals the physical work requires.
Defined retirement inventory
Separate customer equipment from facility infrastructure and retained services.
Assigned removal responsibilities
Coordinate customer approvals, operator access and ITAMG’s physical work.
Reconciled project records
Match collected hardware with the agreed custody, media treatment and disposition outcomes.
Plan Your Expedient Customer Equipment Retirement
Request an ITAMG consultation to review the hardware list, retained services, access arrangements and data-security requirements. Establish the removal and reporting scope needed for a quote.
Data sanitization aligned with NIST SP 800-88 Rev. 2.
- Discuss the project Review the equipment, location, deadline and data-security requirements.
- Confirm the work Identify removal, destruction, transport and reporting needs, plus any site approvals.
- Prepare for a quote Establish the inventory and access information needed to price the agreed scope.
An equipment inventory is useful for the follow-up discussion; it is not required to complete this initial form.

Define Expedient Customer Hardware Retirement Scope
An Expedient equipment-retirement plan should identify the customer-owned hardware leaving the facility and the systems and services that remain.
The Expedient colocation knowledgebase describes clients hosting their own physical hardware in U.S. facilities. Start the ITAMG scope with that approved inventory: servers, storage, networking and customer-owned accessories. Provider-controlled equipment and leased assets need separate ownership and release decisions.
Mark retained appliances, management connections and shared cables before de-racking begins. Identify who will confirm the migration and shutdown conditions. ITAMG can scope physical removal, packing, data destruction, transport, resale and recycling while leaving retained equipment outside the retirement list.
Assign Expedient Facility and Equipment-Removal Responsibilities
Expedient’s published responsibility matrix separates facility infrastructure from client hardware tasks; use that distinction to prepare a project-specific removal plan.
The knowledgebase, updated February 27, 2024, assigns facility functions to Expedient and identifies client hardware delivery and installation as client responsibilities. Its vendor-access example concerns break/fix work. Neither the matrix nor a break/fix ticket establishes permission to remove equipment.
Ask the authorized Expedient contact to confirm the actual retirement work, approved personnel and collection arrangements. ITAMG needs a released asset list and a clear physical handoff. Assign service changes and any facility work to the party responsible under the current agreement.
-
Approve what leaves
Match the retirement list to customer-owned equipment and identify retained dependencies.
-
Confirm the work request
Describe removal and collection explicitly when arranging the required operator approvals.
-
Assign facility tasks
Confirm who handles any operator-controlled power, cabling, access or staging work.
-
Set the custody handoff
Identify where ITAMG receives the released hardware and how exceptions are recorded.
Discuss Your Customer Hardware Removal
Request a ConsultationSequence Expedient Customer Data Treatment and Removal
Data treatment must fit the customer’s shutdown and reuse plan before ITAMG removes storage media or transports the retired equipment.
Decide which media will be erased, physically destroyed or retained before disconnecting the systems needed for the chosen method. Confirm that backups, migrations and retained services no longer depend on the retiring hardware. Hardware removal is a separate milestone from a workload’s successful migration.
ITAMG offers onsite and facility processing, with the method, location and price defined in the quote. When onsite work is required, confirm facility permission and working space. Keep drive serial numbers connected to their parent systems and agree how failed erasure, missing assets or changed treatment instructions are resolved.
-
Approve shutdown and treatment
Confirm the systems released from service and the intended outcome for each media group.
-
Document collection and custody
Reconcile the approved equipment with the physical handoff and processing destination.
-
Match records to the assets
Review the applicable destruction, recycling or recovery records against the collected inventory.
Expedient Customer Decommissioning Costs and Closeout
ITAMG prices the physical equipment-retirement scope, while retained and terminated Expedient services need their own account-level decisions.
Provide the models and quantities, rack positions, permitted work hours, loading conditions and data-treatment requirements. Identify the operator tasks already arranged and any dependencies that constrain the removal sequence. Those details let ITAMG quote labor, packing, transport, processing and reports for the actual work.
Agree on any recovery credit against the hardware’s condition, configuration and resale terms. Track collection, sanitization and disposition separately from service cancellations or contract changes. An asset report cannot confirm that an operator has stopped billing for a retained connection or terminated service.
ITAMG supports the project with trained, insured and background-checked technicians and logistics capabilities that include GPS-tracked, insured vehicles. Confirm the arrangements used for your scope, including the required serialized destruction or recycling certificates.
Expedient Data Centers and Facility Directory
ITAMG’s Expedient directory helps identify the colocation facility relevant to a customer hardware-retirement project.
Browse the Expedient data center directory, then verify the building, customer space and current operator contact against your account records. The operator’s knowledgebase distinguishes its U.S. colocation environment from client-owned hardware; a directory listing does not identify which services your organization has purchased.
For a project involving other operators or markets, use the main data center directory and decommissioning locations hub. Keep the asset list and approved collection arrangements specific to each deployment. Directory inclusion does not establish operator affiliation with ITAMG.
Expedient Customer Equipment-Retirement Questions
Does an Expedient break/fix access ticket cover equipment removal?
A break/fix access ticket does not, by itself, establish removal consent. Have the authorized Expedient contact confirm the retirement work, crew permissions and release arrangements explicitly. ITAMG’s collection scope should identify the approved customer assets and handoff.
Can physical hardware leave while some Expedient services remain?
A partial equipment retirement can be scoped separately from the services your organization retains. Identify shared connections and remaining systems before approving shutdown and removal. Confirm the commercial and technical service changes with Expedient rather than treating a hardware collection as an account cancellation.
What should the Expedient retirement project file contain?
Keep the released inventory, operator approvals, collection and custody records, and the applicable treatment or recycling certificates for ITAMG’s work. Retain separate confirmations for operator or carrier service changes. The file should identify unresolved asset or processing exceptions and who must decide them.
