A lot of companies have policies like, “We’re going to erase the equipment before we dispose of it,” which is great. But what we see is the policies don’t translate into what happens, and they end up shipping live data because they lack the procedures and accountability necessary to get it done.
A lot of companies have policies that they shred all their media on premise and then ship their devices with media still in it, like this CD with 2022 financials on it.
Next mistake is a lot of companies maybe even shred their phones, wipe their phones prior to disposal, ship them thinking that there’s no more data in it, and there’s a SIM card. The SIM card represents a distinct threat to identity theft or other bad actions that someone can take to expose your organization.
Companies leave confidential paper documents inside their devices, such as printers and copiers. Your ITAD provider is not likely a certified paper shredder. We will take care of this for you to protect you, but don’t do it.
Last mistake: Leaving your admin credentials on a sticky note attached to your server. I wonder how to get access to this device.
