Join Mike Easterbrook, Chief of Global Standards at SERI (Sustainable Electronics Recycling International), and Charles Veprek, Director of Business Development at IT Asset Management Group (ITAMG) as they discuss the status quo of hard drive destruction and propose more sustainable alternatives in IT asset disposal.
Are we shredding too many hard drives unnecessarily? While physical destruction is sometimes necessary, particularly for non-functional drives or those containing classified information, the IT asset management industry might be missing crucial opportunities for sustainability and reuse.
Key topics discussed:
The prevalence of hard drive shredding in IT asset disposal
When physical destruction is necessary vs. when it might be overkill
The efficacy of data sanitization software as an alternative to shredding
The importance of educating people about sustainable IT asset management practices
Balancing data security concerns with environmental responsibility
Strategies for reducing e-waste in IT asset lifecycle management
This conversation is a must-watch for IT asset managers, sustainability professionals, and anyone interested in the intersection of technology and environmental stewardship. Learn how rethinking your approach to data destruction could lead to significant reductions in e-waste and more sustainable IT practices overall.

Mike Easterbrook: I see so many hard drives being physically shred. I understand this is a customer concept, that they want to see hard drives being shred. But for me, I can understand that if the drives don’t work, sanitizations failed, and maybe even the case, classified information. But it’s like my last point, always focusing on E-Waste, E-Waste or disposal. If we as an industry go to shredding too soon, and it may be because a customer demand, I think that we’re missing an opportunity to educate customers on the efficacy of sanitization software to eliminate data.
